2008 Music In Review - #16

I was at a friends house in Detroit last year and he had music from DeVotchKa playing in the back ground. My friend who had joined me from Ann Arbor, turned to me and said, "I didn't know he liked music from Eastern Europe." I would guess this would be a compliment to a band from Denver.

I had the pleasure of seeing them for the first time a few years back at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. They were fantastic. Even in an festival environment, they pulled me in and I didn't want them to leave. I can only imagine what the show would feel like in a small club or theater.

The first thing you will notice when listening to DeVotchKa is the music. It isn't something you'd likely hear in the mainstream. It will challenge you and keep you wanting more. After you've made your way through the 41 minutes of A Mad & Faithful Telling, you'll not believe how quickly that time will pass.

You probably have heard them without really knowing it. If you watch the movie Little Miss Sunshine, you've heard them. In 2006, they won a Grammy for the score to the movie.

One writer wrote that DeVotchKa is a soothing cacophony. Here is "Head Honcho," which will give you a small taste to what you're missing.
