2008 Music In Review - #21

Last year this group won the Grammy for Best Comedy Album for their 2007 EP called, The Distant Future. They returned in 2008 with a 15 track album called, The Flight Of The Conchords. It just happens to be the same name as the name of the group and strangely enough the same name as the TV show staring these two guys from New Zealand.

You can't just look at this album as one of those throw away comedy albums. They don't follow the humor road that a Cheech & Chong or Spinal Tap will go down. The music is like a fine wine. It will get better with age or in this case multiple listens. If your a fan of the show you'll recognize some of the songs and most likely recall the scenes that these were featured in. For me I can't stop laughing over Murray as he swoons over the visiting IT Tech in the song, "Leggy Blonde."

Jermaine Clement does the Barry White imitation very well in the song, "Business Time." Sleazy funk in its best as he tries to persuade his partner for some mid-week fun. He talks about how great of a lover he is, as it only takes him a couple of minutes before he completes his business.
"You say you want more?
Well, I'm not surprised.
But I'm very sleepy"

The track that that really works for me is the song that feels like it is from Purple Rain. Clement comes in with his Prince imitation with, "The Most Beautiful Girl." I just can't stop laughing, no matter how many times I hear this song.

"And when you're on the street
Depending on the street
I bet you are definitely in the top three
Good looking girls on the street
Depending on the street
And when I saw you at my mate's place
I thought what...is...she...doing...
At my mate's place
How did Dave get a hottie like that to a party like this"

Season Two of The Flight Of The Conchords shows up on HBO starting Sunday, January 19th. My 21st selection of 2008 is the self-titled release by The Flight Of The Concords.
