2008 Music In Review - #27

Vampire Weekend feels like they've been around forever. In fact the band started only a couple of years ago when the members meet while at Columbia College in NYC. In 2007 they released a single called "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa." This song caused a firestorm for the band. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked the song as the 67th best song of 2007. This with no album out by the band.

The self-titled album was released at the end of January. When you listen to an album for a whole year, it starts to lose some of the luster by the time you get to ranking your favorites.

The album is a 37 minute gem of one pop song after another. The lead track is "Mansard Roof" which gives you a great intro to the album and what to expect from this band. Upon hearing the track for the first time, you get a very happy feeling. The songs are light, upbeat and clean. Take some 60's pop, mix in some African rhythm and sprinkle some good indie sense and that is what makes up Vampire Weekend.

Before you know it, the 37 minutes have gone by. It is an easy album to listen to. It is a great album for that drive down the shore with the top down.

I present to you, number 27, Vampire Weekend.
