I'm a music junkie. Spend more money than I really should on this addiction. Today I turned on the computer and hit random. Logged into my LastFM account to see my latest stats of my music I've listened to.

If you're not familuar with LastFM, it is a site that takes all the music you listen too on multiple devices and keeps track of what you've listened too. Now I have multiple MP3 players and computers with music on them. Trying to keep track of what you listen to was usually reserved for the device you're using.

I usually miss the monumental flips of the number of listens, kind of like watching the odometer flipping over on your car. Today though, I was luck to watch (or listen) to the counter flip over.

There're times I like to listen to a certain set of music, but today I was going to let the computer randomly decide what my 13,000 track was going to be. I was at 12998 when I looked at the LastFM site.

It is scarey to think that my computer knows my music taste, but there are times I've worried. The music it selected today I wasn't looking at the content but rather the artists them self.

Right there those three performers easily sum me up in my top three favorite performers. I've seen Elvis at least a half a dozen times, Neko almost every year over the last ten plus years, sometimes multiple times each year. John Lennon is probably one of my all time favorite artists. Beatles will always top my list as favorite desert island band, but when it comes to the top and most influential Beatle to me, it was John Lennon.

#13001 - Radiohead

So to start off the next thousand listens, Radiohead jumps into the speaker. This would be easily my number two desert island band. Radiohead is by far the one group I do listen to the most these days. Another nice feature of LastFM is the ability to see your own personal music charts. Radiohead is the number one the group chart. Two of thier albums rank in my top ten listens. (If you're wondering, Neko Case's "Middle Cyclone" is number one.) Three songs in the top 15 listens.

New Muppets Trailer

The fall movie time is creeping upon us. One movie that I can't wait to see is the American version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. It was and still is a great read, the Swedish version of the movie is fantastic! I'm hoping that the American version can live up to the hype. Here is probably the best trailer I've ever seen and I'm addicted to watching movie trailers.

With the above trailer being so captivating, it didn't take long for the Muppet's to come along and spoof the trailer and they did it in spectacular fashion.

Battlestar Galactica Homage Video Mashed With The Beastie Boys Sabotage

What do you get when you mix one of my all-time favorite TV Shows with one of my all-time favorite groups, let alone favorite song. The original video was directed by Spike Jones as a homage to 1970s crime dramas like Streets of San Francisco and Starsky & Hutch. This 1994 song, "Sabotage" came off the album, Ill Communication.

The video lost to Areosmith and REM in MTV's Video Awards but in 2009 won the category, "Best Video (That Should Have Won A Moonman)." The second video of the three in this post is the original video.

March 8th, a lady with a screen name of kataman78 posted on her blog this shot for shot mash-up between her favorite TV show and song. Check out below, the video she created as a tribute to her favorite TV show.

Sony has just released a new poster for a movie coming out this summer called, "The Other Guys." What great about this new style of promoting a movie, it basically combines a trailer and a movie poster. Now you have a Motion Movie Poster for today's digital age.

You can go to this website to see the poster. Unfortunately you can't turn it off, so every time you'd come to my website, the poster would start playing.

Alex Chilton, You'll Be Missed!

It is amazing how just one performer can open up your eyes to millions of possibilities. I had just started college and one of my favorite local Minneapolis bands, The Replacements had just released the album, Please To Meet Me. I had been working in a music store for the last year or more and still hadn't mastered the knowledge of "great" music. On this album, they had this song called "Alex Chilton." I first thought it was a made up name or maybe someone the band knew. I then saw an album by Alex Chilton called High Priest. My knowledge expanded. First his solo work, then finding out he was in Big Star. I knew those songs. Then I found out he was the singer for the Box Tops when he was 16. I even knew those songs.

How can one guy who was so influential in the music industry stay so far under the radar? Let's start with the Box Tops. One song I had heard, yet didn't know who did the song as I was growing up was, "The Letter."

In 1971 Alex join Chris Bell and Big Star was born. The music of Big Star is influential to the majority of main stream rock stars of the 80's and 90's. Even though they didn't have commercial success, all three of the early albums are in the Rolling Stone Magazine's all time best albums.

Alex reformed the band with fellow Big Star member Jody Stephens and Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer. They did a concert and live album. Here is the track that you will remember Cheap Trick covering for the TV Show, That 70's Show. Here is the band live on the Tonight Show.

Alex Chilton was only 59. He died of a heart attack in New Orleans today. He is so associated with the Memphis sound and as the Replacements sang, "If he died in Memphis, then that'd be cool..." No matter where he is right now, that place just got a little bit cooler!

New Computer - New Software - New Photos

I've been taking photos. Up until now, I've not done much with them, but now I've purchased a new computer and new editing software. So I've decided to start putting them on display.

I decided to create my own screen saver from my favorite photos. As I take new photos or start going through my older photos from years past, I'll edit them and add them to this folder.

R.I.P. Sparklehorse’s Mark Linkous

It is always sad to see one of your favorite musicians pass away. It is even harder when they commit suicide.

Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mark Linkous has committed suicide, his publicist confirmed to Rolling Stone last night. Sparklehorse released four albums during their time together, he also produced Daniel Johnston's album Fear Yourself. Last year he collaborated for Danger Mouse and created one of my favorite albums of 2009 called Dark Night Of The Soul. The good news on this album, EMI Records has settled their lawsuit against Danger Mouse and the album will have an official release later this year.

“It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear friend and family member, Mark Linkous, took his own life today,” reads a statement from his family. “We are thankful for his time with us and will hold him forever in our hearts. May his journey be peaceful, happy and free. There’s a heaven and there’s a star for you.”

People grieve in different ways. For me, I like to celebrate the their life. Mark was an incredible musician and brought me happiness when listening to his music. Even though his lyrics can be dark in nature, his music always brought an emotional response, whether it be good or bad.

Funny or Die has done it again with another fun video. The common thread for all these people getting together is the Main Street Brigade. Here is something about the MSB from their website.

For centuries, in cities across the US, the fire brigades have been groups of civilians who rush to respond in emergencies, protecting lives and property. Sometimes professionals, and often just responsible neighbors, they have been willing to act, and stick their necks out, for the benefit of their communities.

Today, we all know family members, friends, and co-workers whose lives has been detrimentally affected, if not completely devastated, by the dramatic downturn in our economy. Our communities have been damaged by layoffs, foreclosures. We all know people whose incomes are being eaten up by sudden increases in interest rates on their credit cards. While the arsonists escape on their corporate jets, we are inhaling the smoke.

The Main Street Brigade is a rapid response team, nationwide, that can be activated to protect our communities against just this kind of devastation.

Right now, we are ALL vulnerable to the big banks, CEOs and Wall Street institutions whose irresponsibility and risky behavior caused this economic crisis. Our vulnerability is being increased by the fact that when our government proposes an agency with sound measures to protect our interests, the arsonists are pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into lobbying and advertising to prevent that protection from being implemented.

Today, our work is to support the formation of the Consumer Financial Protection act, and protect our families and communities.

As we go forward, their will be other actions we can do.

OK Go - Does It Again - Amazing New Video

Back in the good old days of MTV, when videos were being played, as a performer, if you had a great video, it would propel you forward on the charts. Now days with MTV just another cable channel, getting noticed takes a little extra effort if you're an unknown band.

OK Go did this with there breakthrough video for "Here It Goes Again" choreographed on treadmills.

Each new song from each new album, OK Go looks for ways to one up themselves. The art of one-take videos has never been pushed further than by this band. When they created the video for the song, "This Too Shall Pass" the record label decided that no one could embed the video on blogs or websites. This was the reason the band became viral, was we as bloggers could embed this amazing videos and comment on them on our own sites. The backlash was felt, the greedy record label never gave in, so the band made a new video. It is free to embed and it was sponsored by State Farm.

Now I'm sure people will be up in arms about a State Farm truck being pushed to start off the video, but come on. These incredible pieces of work don't come free. Someone has to pay for it. I'm sure the people upset about there being a sponsor in the video, wouldn't have contributed to the making of it.

Happy Hollows - How Did I Miss This Band?

Sarah Negahdari, Charlie Mahoney and Chris Hernandez make up the band The Happy Hollows. A band that makes me wish I had known about them in 2009. I'm going to have to create a new list of my favorite music I didn't know about in 2009.

This three piece indie-rock band from Los Angeles that play fast and irreverent noise-pop. The group is fronted by Sarah and holding down the rhythm, Charlie on bass and Chris Hernandez on drums. The L.A. Times has described their sound as a “pugilistic mix of stinging guitars, turbulent rhythms, and shouted vocals” that “alternates between childlike experimentation and ferocious firestorm.”

One of my all-time favorite songs growing up was by an Australian group called The Church. I had the opportunity to see them live at The Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis back in the 80's. They filmed a video during this concert for the song "Reptile." I still watch the video hoping I can pick myself out in the crowd. Maybe I need to find the old concert ticket to see where I was actually sitting. I can remember they did the song multiple times during the concert to get enough video roll to make the final cut.

It is amazing how a song, when hearing it for the first time in a few years can bring back a bunch of memories that I had forgotten about. Thanks to Sarah's incredible voice, The Happy Hollows really have made the song, "Under The Milky Way" a favorite of mine all over again!

Miles Kurosky's video for "Dog In The Burning Building"

You may not know the musician Miles Kurosky, but you may know his former band he was in. Beulah called it quits about six years ago. Since then, he got married, had shoulder surgery and was hospitalized with kidney troubles.

Coming out on March 8th with be his first solo record by the man behind the band Beulah. More than two dozen friends joined him in making this 10 track album called The Desert Of Shallow Effects.

He is currently preparing for a tour and he recently blogged about people asking him if he'll be doing Beulah songs or not. Head on over to his website and join in the discussion of what Beulah song you would like to hear on the upcoming tour.

2009 Music In Review - #1

One thing is constant from the first time I was exposed to Neko Case by my friend Eric, is that the cliché of so and so could sing the phone book and I’d buy it. Well, Neko Case is that one artist that I would buy it the day it came out.

The album was recorded partly in a barn that was filled with old abandoned pianos that Neko found on craigslist. The barn sits on her property in Vermont which adds a sense of isolation that runs throughout the album. Not all of the songs have that solidarity sound, but turn into big and scary songs as they collide with her observations on relationships.

Middle Cyclone is one of the best albums by one of the most talented ladies in the business today. Looking back at the album cover, it shows Neko Case, leading the charge into battle for me and my favorite albums of 2009. Her voice is amazing and she is at the top of her game.

"This Tornado Loves You" is found on my favorite album of 2009 by Neko Case.

2009 Music In Review - #2

Have you seen the Avett Brothers live? You need to do yourself a favor and make trek to their hugely energetic bouncefest. I’ve never witnessed a band who are so in touch with their audience and their audience so in touch with them. You would think all this great live energy would be tough to make its way to the album. Somehow they keep pulling it off. I And Love And You is by far the most polished album to date and best they’ve done.

This sixth album continues one of the biggest grassroots stories of last decade. Self-promoting shows, eventually signing with a local North Carolina label prior to making it to the big leagues with Sony Records. Add the legendary producer, Rick Rubin, you have a band that the mainstream audience now getting a taste of what this trio from the Carolina’s can do.

Every instrument sounds perfectly placed, and that's a shame because the Avetts got more mileage out of their rough edges than most bands this decade. Buffing away their rough edges and rowdy quirks, Rubin establishes a mood of intense pensiveness even on the first song, when they announce they're getting no sleep till Brooklyn.

2009 Music In Review - #3

The Hazards of Love is a full-fledged rock-opera about a woman named Margaret; her shape-shifting lover, William; a grouchy forest Queen; and a coolly sociopathic rapscallion known only as “The Rake”.

It is, in other words, the album that the Decemberists have always wanted to make.
A rock-opera, and is as unabashedly committed to the form as its more famous predecessors like Genesis’s The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway or David Bowie’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and like those albums, the details of the story here are somewhat unimportant, painted in broad strokes and more based on character and mood than it is on specific plot points.

The music here is as strong as anything that the band has ever done, though the album is distinctly different than their others—sparser, perhaps, in timbre and in instrumentation, but more varied in style.

But listening to The Hazards of Love is thrilling, both because of the music itself and because the album was such a gamble from the first. Improbable as it seems, they pull it off. But if anyone could, you'd expect it to be the Decemberists.

2009 Music In Review - #4

Emily Haines’ heart is beating like a hammer and so is Metric’s fourth full-length album, Fantasies. So cohesive and deliberate is this album from start to finish, it seems like a record that, by design, made itself.

The band met in the woods outside Seattle to work on acoustic songs. Those of you who have seen Metric’s supercharged live shows know those songs wouldn’t stay acoustic for long, however.

What will really bring listeners back to this album, though, is the music, which is the most consistently sustaining energy the band has ever created.

This isn’t the breakthrough album that nobody expected. This is precisely the album everyone was waiting for from Metric, a culmination of all their strengths and a slicing off of the fat that may have slowed them down in the past.

2009 Music In Review - #5

The obvious points of comparison for Monsters of Folk—the first group outing for Matt "M" Ward, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, and Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes—are to the Traveling Wilburys and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. But Monsters of Folk is a more sonically diverse album than those comparisons might suggest.

The album gives its would-be supergroup opportunity to showcase the full breadth of their individual influences. That works in the band's favor, as it keeps Monsters from succumbing to the dreary monotony and self-importance that sink so many contemporary folk records.

It's also a credit to the talents of each man that no one steals the spotlight. With all four players clearly bringing out the best in each other.

2009 Music In Review - #6

Glasgow’s indie-pop geniuses paint another masterpiece. Camera Obscura could sing stereo instructions and it’d still make your skin tighten and tingle. My Maudlin Career is blissed-out orchestral indie pop gem that has yet to leave my regular mp3 shuffle.

Having been around since 1996, this is there 4th album and first for 4AD and in my opinion, there best collection of work to date. On their past three albums, they could be called a lot of things, but happy, chipper and sunny would have not been used. The sound might be upbeat, but they usually dealt with love lost, disappointment and always having a broken heart.

My Maudlin Career has to be the darkest album they've done, which further fills out the band’s claim that Leonard Cohen is a huge influence.

2009 Music In Review - #7

Predictable is a word that should never apply to the Flaming Lips, and any mold that they might have been creating within is completely shattered with Embryonic. No, there are no weepy ballads, there are no catchy pop-rockers and there only a few tracks with anything resembling a conventional song structure.

Combining the Lips’ long-time fascinations with early Pink Floyd-inspired psychedelia, science fiction, and long instrumental interludes, Embryonic often sounds like the soundtrack for a futuristic space movie.

It’s definitely not something you will listen to every day, but on those days when you feel the need to listen to something truly engaging, Embryonic will make its way into your rotation.

Off of my number seven favorite album of 2009, here is the Flaming Lips with "Silver Trembling Hands"

I can still remember my first time seeing the Flaming Lips live, it was a trip and a half. Sometimes you just don't know what is going on, I learned quickly, just let it all go and enjoy the ride. This is the first track off of Embryonic, shot by a roadie off the top of the tour bus.

2009 Music In Review - #8

Patterson Hood of Drive-By Truckers released his sophomore solo album called Murdering Oscar (and other Love Songs). While his debut solo album, Killers and Stars, was an acoustic album that sounded like it was recorded in a bathroom.

The lo-fi treatment was what I was expecting on Murdering Oscar, but that is not what greeted me when I pressed play. Big, ominous guitar riffs roll in like thunderheads when the title track opens things up. You immediately feel the song’s intensity before a grizzled word is uttered from Patterson’s southern jowls. Then the tale of kill or be killed begins to unfold: “I killed Oscar/Shot him in the head/Put the gun in his mouth/ Watched his brains fly out.”

2009 Music In Review - #9

It is a good thing when you have the two former member of Uncle Tupelo with back to back albums in my top 10. As a huge fan of the former band, Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) and Jay Farrar (Son Volt) both putting out new albums close to each other, it probably the closest thing I'll have to an Uncle Tuepolo reunion. Can't really believe it has been 15 years since they disbanded.

Son Volt's new album, American Central Dust, is by far the best thing they've done since the debut album, Trace. Where as the Wilco album envokes sounds from its entire catalog, Son Volt jumps back and brings a simplicity and power that was envoked in Uncle Tupelo and the first album, Trace. Honky Tonk, biker bar and rental cars.

Jeff Tweedy proves to everyone on this album as with most of his previous that he is one of America's greatest songwriters alive today.

Wilco’s latest album, Wilco (The Album) is a mostly modest collection of sturdy songs. This is the bands 7th album and probably the most technically accomplished. This is not the music of men trying to be cool; it is the work of veterans unafraid to express mature emotions with an appropriate level of musical depth and nuance. Being a chilled-out grown-up may not always be exciting, but it's certainly something to admire and respect.

This is how the band describes themselves.

"The Asteroids Galaxy Tour are musicians on a mission dedicated to turning pop technicolour, making funk get down with folk and mixing old soul with psychedelia and spaced-out beats."

You've probably heard The Asteroids Galaxy Tour at least once this year without ever realizing it was them. That will most certainly change though once you get seconds into the ubiquitous splash "Around the Bend." The very second those infectious horns, your memory will most certainly be jogged to a certain Apple iPod Touch commercial. While the song is the most noticeable on the band's debut album Fruit, it is most definitely not their best.

From front to back Fruit is an irresistible, infectious aural treat. Packed with an armful of danceable melodies, hummable choruses and care-free verses, Fruit is arguably one of the year's most original albums.

After turning in excellent acting and musical performances in the movie Once, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova decided to use their talents to form The Swell Season. While their self-titled debut featured many of the songs from the film, Strict Joy is a mostly acoustic album of original songs.

The album demonstrates the power of Hansard and Irglova as a musical duo. The two started dating shortly after Once was released, but they broke up at the beginning of 2009. This is reflected in Hansard’s lyrics. On “Low Rising,” he sings “there’s no further for us to fall." He and Irglova harmonize beautifully, and the mostly acoustic music works perfectly to set the tone.

Silversun Pickups in this new album is vast, dark, a little mysterious, sad, dignified and palpably in pain. Frontman Brian Aubert has mentioned “some are quiet and delicate… others are just f'ing loud”.

Swoon is the second release conjures up images of My Bloody Valentine or The Smashing Pumpkins. The new territory that they explore on this album shows the versitility of the band and showing promise for more great things to come in the future.

From the lucky #13 album of 2009, this is the song that turned me into a fan. Here is "Panic Switch" from Silversun Pickups.

What do beautiful girls, belted dress, high heels, moose heads, amplifiers, a one-man judge, eye rolls and the most competitive game of musical chairs recorded on film ever have in common? Nothing. Here is the song, "Substitution" by the Silversun Pickups.

This third album from the Heartless Bastards is essentially an Erika Wennerstrom solo album. It was recorded after the departure of the band’s bassist and drummer. Erika emotes about relationship loss, sadness, transition, and moving forward.

The Mountain, she strays further and further from the monolithic blues-rock debut and sharpening the soft focus of the second album. The guitar-heavy title track certainly lives up to its name, sloping steeply to a psychedelic peak. This album isn't merely a single peak, but a whole mountain range.

U2 is not a band that will rest on its sound. You can place all the albums together and each one will have a different feel than the predecessor, yet have that sound which will tell you it is U2 on your speaker. Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois join in on the producing and songwriting credits in an effort to tinker with and refine the sound.

If you were looking at another “old school” All That You Can’t Leave Behind, you’ll still be happy. If you were looking for another “experimental” Zooropa, you’ll still be happy. Ten years ago, the band was written off. They were dinosaurs and time to hang it up and let the young kids go at it.

No Line On The Horizon isn’t some radical evolution of rock n roll. This is a messing of all the great sounds that U2 has seemed to bring to the light in one package. It doesn’t sound aged, it doesn’t sound old and doesn’t sound stale.

2009 Music In Review - #16

Grandaddy broke up in the early part of 2006 just as they were poised to break into mainstream success. Would Jason Lytle’s solo release keep the Grandaddy feel going? More or less it is. Jason’s voice is distinctive and will always remind you of Grandaddy. The title track has this line in it;
“Last thing I heard I was left for dead. Well I could give two shits about what they said.”

It shows that he understands how people are going to approach this album, and he is just letting you know right up front what is going to happen on, Yours Truly, The Commuter.

The album was inspired by the vast openness or rural Northern California and Montana. The album offers up plenty of dreamy vocals and vintage keyboard fuzz that Jason is known for. If you are looking for a Grandaddy album, you won’t be disappointed.

Jason Molina is a strange man. I've always wanted to like his music, but kept having trouble with most of his albums he made in the past. From his solo work to Songs:Ohio to the latest band, Magnolia Electric Co. Now the latest album, Josephine has finally hit the mark.

The beginnings of the new album came about when Jason Molina and bassist Evan Farrell got together to work on some new song ideas. Tragedy struck a few months later when Evan passed away. The rest of the band wanted to create Josephine as a tribute to their friend.

The album is not a tearful goodbye, but an attempt to bring Farrell’s artistic vision and hopes for the album. It has become the most focused and potent album they’ve recorded. The album was built around the piano rather than the swirling guitar from previous records.

Off the album, Josephine, this is the title track by Magnolia Electric Co.

Every so often you just need a record that just shakes you up. Since the initial announcement of the Dead Weather, much has been made of Horehound being simply another Jack White creation. Horehound is anything but just another branch from the White Stripes tree. The music is closer to a filthy, unshaven, distant relative of the blues.

In the gospel according to Jack White, the devil is a woman — and she's always looking for nice Catholic boys to add to her collection. Maybe the guy keeps such an insane work schedule because he's afraid idle hands are the devil's workshop.

According to their Wikipedia profile, the Low Anthem use no fewer than 32 instruments in creating their second album Oh My God, Charlie Darwin. These range from guitar, upright bass and clarinet, to Tibetan singing bowl, tongue drum and fun machine.

When seeing the band live, after almost every song they swap instruments or pick up new ones.

Dredging the darker recesses of Americana, the lyrics concoct scenes of life on the margins, where people are apt to smoke themselves to sleep or comb their hair with a frying pan. Most of the songs are slow and reflective, but occasionally things heat up and the imagery turns apocalyptic.

With hard graft, sleepless nights and plenty of coffee, a portion of the team behind The End of the Road Festival worked hard to bring the film to life through the arduous but rewarding process of stop-frame animation. Patience and attention to detail were key but the team looked to embrace the hand-made look the medium is known and loved for.

It’s been almost three years since Grizzly Bear broke through with their 2006 album, Yellow.
Grizzly Bear’s third album, Veckatimest, is a masterful album, riding a “more is more” philosophy, vocal harmonies by the barrel full, and a rustic song cycle to form one of the year’s best.

Veckatimest, named after an island in Massachusetts. Although Grizzly Bear started as a bedroom project by Ed Droste, Veckatimest is clearly an album made by a full band.

The album lends itself well to multiple spins, because each repeated listen reveals another perfectly crafted shard you missed on the last go-round.

Bat For Lashes is the name that British songstress Natasha Khan goes by. She has drawn what seems like an endless line of flattering comparisons: When not being likened to Kate Bush, Björk, Annie Lennox, Enya, or some other ethereal diva, she has been cast as a feminized equivalent of Thom Yorke, considered his equal in wounded narratives and imaginative music.

Two Suns is an album that teeters on the edge of its own fractured, fickle, minimalism; threatening to collapse in on itself at any moment. In the hands of any lesser voice than Khan, all of Two Suns’ dramatic instrumental posturing may have well done just that.

I couldn't describe my #22 album of 2009 any better than the way Rolling Stone magazine did earlier this year.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are a 10-piece L.A. jug band who tour in an old Greyhound bus, pose for publicity photos on what looks like a communal farm circa 1969 and sing jangling folk-rock songs with lyrics like "Hot and heavy/Pumpkin pie/Chocolate candy/Jesus Christ." The big, windy music is skillfully written and arranged — songs like "40 Day Dream" and the eerie "Home" build to rousing singalongs — and frontman Alex Ebert has an appealingly raggedy voice. But the group's attempts to evoke Age of Aquarius utopianism are suffocated by self-consciousness; the record feels like an art-college thesis.

Fanfarlo have mastered the ability to merge a sincere melancholy with a passion that really connects. Reservoir is ample testimony of their talents, and marks the long-awaited arrival of one of the England's most promising (not so) new bands.

But the intelligent way in which Fanfarlo structure their songs, and the unique and subtle appreciation of melody that the band collectively command is distinctive and inspiring.

To focus on individual songs is a fruitless exercise. Reservoir is an album, more than a mere collection of songs.

Reservoir is a neat, considered, and polished piece of work that is unrelenting in its charm.

It's Not Me, It's You is a wonderful record, and, better than that, a pop album brave enough to have a go at defining the times. If Lily Allen wanted to dodge the inevitable backlash about her lack of working-class authenticity and play it safe, the worst possible thing she could do was write songs about George W Bush (Fuck You), drugs (Everybody's at It), celebrity (The Fear), God (Him) and her father (He Wasn't There).

The best thing about It's Not Me, It's You, though, is Lily Allen's voice, because it's the balance between the earthiness of her accent and the creaminess of her tone that is the killer element in her pop arsenal; the natural sad smile in her voice lends sincerity to sentiments both cruel and kind.

Mozart represented all things respectable. Amadeus won eight Oscars. Liszt was flamboyant and he had hysterical women fighting over him a century before the Beatles. No one remembers the movie Lisztomania.

The fourth album from Phoenix references both composers and come somewhere between Mozart’s formal and Listz’s flair. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix has angst, disappointment and despair.

Phoenix is your typical poppy, skinny white indie-rock outfit. Hooky choruses and guitar riffs, easy on the ears singing, and tight backbeats. The difference from all the rest, they’re French. They are like the Shins without the underlying sorrow. They are like the Strokes without the guitar solos. They just might be the band that bubbles to the top of the scene that seems to be over crowded with being the next great shoe gazer.

Dave Longstreth has created on chugging, smoke-huffing machine. Most songs jerk and cough with their tempos going up or down unexpectedly.

The Dirty Projectors have always made albums close to be great, now they actually put all the pieces together in one album. Bitte Orca was able to pull together all the elements, R&B vocal layered over herky-jerky art rock guitars.

The result is the most thoroughly engaging entry in The Dirty Projectors catalog and one of the most singularly engrossing albums of the year.

Someone wrote that Bill Callahan’s voice has part Johnny Cash’s swagger and part Lou Reed’s witticism. The former lead singer from the band Smog returns with another solo record, Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle. Callahan’s vocals once again dominate and the production is more intimate than before.

This is Callahan’s second release with lyrics that are still unwittingly complex and the music retains smoky simplicity that proves him to be as ageless as the forest.

A sad, bearded dude emerges from a self-imposed exile. Recruits a band, earns web-buzz, NPR praise and the rest is history. A short history. The Antlers was a solo project from Peter Silberman. Hospice is the second release from The Antlers and during the recordings; he had two guest musicians who became permanent members of the band.

Hospice is a fully-realized and fully-functional concept album. It is centered on a relationship with a terminally ill child. It has snippets of conversations with doctors and terrifying dreams. It touches upon guilt, duty, morality and hope in the face of hopelessness. These songs are stripped of some of their power when they stand alone, which is an indication of the album’s success. Even when the subject matter gets a bit too heavy, the band's melodies are so gorgeous and the arrangements so soaring and powerful that playing them over and over again is inevitable.
My pick for the 28th favorite album of 2009, The Antlers, Hospice. Here's a track off the album called, "Bear."

It is very rare to find an album about splitting up with God after a lifetime together. David Bazan is the voice of Pedro The Lion. The songs of Pedro The Lion, often dealt with crises of faith and his motives of believing in God. At some point, Bazan started to doubt his faith.

Curse Your Branches is his first solo album. The first song, “Hard To Be” is a story about the re-telling the story of Adam and Eve from a doubter’s perspective.
The album confronts Bazan’s decent into serious drinking. The pain he caused his wife and child. No matter how dark the subject gets, they offer serious inspiration. The album is undoubtedly his most personal and his best work to date.

Formed in 1994 by pianist, Thomas Lauderdale, in Portland, Oregon, Pink Martini blends Latin, Lounge, Jazz and Classical to get their vintage sound. Lauderdale describes the band’s sound as “music of the world without being world music.”

Splendor In The Grass is the fourth album is an impeccably crafted blend of intimacy and exuberance. The album has nine new tracks plus four covers. Singer, China Forbes, sings in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) yet each song, no matter what language, feels like it should be hanging out with all the other songs.

The first album in this years countdown would be my number one of the year, if it was actually released.

Dark Night Of The Soul is an album with the songs written by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse (Mark Linkous). Each track also having a guest that had a big hand in composing and producing the work.

The album was initially going to be packaged with a book of photos taken by David Lynch. The music will never be officially released, "due to an ongoing dispute with EMI." The book of photographs will come with a blank, recordable CD-R. All copies will be clearly labeled: "For legal reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will."

The music on Dark Night of the Soul delivers in every way you'd hope for. It's beautiful but haunting, surreal and dark, but sometimes comical and affecting, with ear-popping, multilayered production work. It just gets more mesmerizing with every listen.

Other artists appearing on Dark Night of the Soul include James Mercer of The Shins, The Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Frank Black of the Pixies, Iggy Pop, Nina Persson of The Cardigans, Suzanne Vega, Vic Chesnutt, David Lynch, and Scott Spillane of Neutral Milk Hotel and The Gerbils.

Vic Chesnutt, Singer and Songwriter, Dies at 45

Born in Jacksonville, Fla., on Nov. 12, 1964, James Victor Chesnutt was adopted and grew up in Zebulon, Ga.; his grandfather gave him guitar lessons, having him transpose “Sweet Georgia Brown” into every key in the scale. He was injured in 1983, while driving drunk, he later said, and shortly thereafter moved to Athens and became a regular at the 40 Watt Club, where he was seen by Mr. Stipe.

A documentary, “Speed Racer: Welcome to the World of Vic Chesnutt,” was released in 1993, and in 1996 his songs were performed by Madonna, the Indigo Girls, Smashing Pumpkins, R.E.M. and others for “Sweet Relief II: The Gravity of the Situation,” an album that benefited the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, a nonprofit group that offers musicians medical support.

His survivors include his wife, Tina Whatley Chesnutt; a sister, Lorinda Crane; and nine nieces and nephews.

He sings about suicide in “Flirted With You All My Life,” from his recent album “At the Cut,” describing death as a lover he must break up with because his accomplishments in life are incomplete:

"When you touched a friend of mine I thought I would lose my mind
But I found out with time that really, I was not ready, no no, cold death
Oh death, I’m really not ready."
